New Chicago boat house to boost river recreation.
CHICAGO USA — A new boathouse has opened along the Chicago River as part of the city's effort to boost recreation on the iconic waterway.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other city officials joined rowing enthusiasts on Sunday for the grand opening of the $1.4 million facility at River Park. It includes a kayak-staging area for rentals, as well as office and storage space.
A canopy-covered area also will provide shelter and a place for kayak concessions at the facility.
It is the third boat house opened by the city.
Officials also announced that a fourth boat house will be built on in the city's South Side Bridgeport neighborhood. That will be a larger project costing an estimated $5.7 million.
Emanuel says he wants to make the river the city's "next great recreational frontier."
