This guide will help
you make an informed decision as to what type of boat will serve
you best. A series of questions in the form of links will follow.
Read through the descriptions and choose the option that appeals
to you most. Once completed, you will be provided with information
on boats you might be interested in looking at as well as the gear
choices available for the type of paddling you are interested in.
Open boat paddled with
a single blade. Canoes give a feeling of being on the water with
unrestricted movement. They may not be the swiftest craft, but
they glide nicely at touring speeds and can carry large loads.
These boats range from ten foot whitewater "toys" to
near twenty foot touring boats.
Decked boat paddled
with a double bladed paddle. Kayaks give a feeling of being one
with the water as your seat is at or below the waterline. The
lower seating makes kayaks able to be much thinner and faster,
while still being relatively stable. Generally kayaks are faster
than canoes, but are limited in gear capacity.
